New Blog

For a long time I’ve struggled with WordPress. It’s my computer, or router, not the site, but it’s annoying none-the-less. Almost every time I try and write a post the site just times out on me. Of course, now that I’m coming here to write that I’ve moved my blog, it loads up no problem!

So, here’s my new page, please visit!

Better Late Than Never

This is the ‘smashing machine’ I spoke about a while ago:

I thought that was very inventive! He had no instruction or suggestion for this one.

I have pictures I really want to upload here, but my phone is almost dead at the moment. I’ll upload them tomorrow. I wish I could remember to update my blog more, so many times though I try and it just won’t load on my laptop and I can’t figure out why!

We have 2 hamsters now, Ponny and Benny. Both girls. After being bitten one too many times the kids don’t handle them now, but they get to run around in their balls and things. Cora and Calvin enjoy looking after them, changing their food and water and cleaning out their cages.

At the moment we’re just kind of trudging along in an ‘unschooling’ sort of way, I love that but I still have this voice in the back of my head that they need to be doing “school”. But the call for schoolwork was being met with sad faces, and I just don’t want them to see reading, writing, and learning as a chore! I want them to do it because they want to. Calvin wrote me his first note the other day, it said “To Mummy, you are the prettiest Mummy in the world, from Calvin”. Even if I don’t push, they’ll still learn to read, write, spell, add, subtract, and all the other stuff that’s necessary in life.. won’t they?

The things kids say

I was having a chat to Calvin yesterday about speaking properly to Maia. She speaks very well, but he has a tendency to pronounce things the way she does. I thought the conversation had gone really well, but as I walked away he turned to Maia and said cheerfully “Maia, you’re getting teached to speak proper!”. Back to square one!

We spend our days at the park and building pirate ships… is that wrong? 🙂

Wonderful Wednesday

What a lovely day we had today. We had invited our lovely librarian over for lunch. Cora and Calvin were so excited! I had fresh bread and pea soup on the go and we spent the morning tidying up.

We had a great lunch and the kids showed off their rooms and projects excitedly. I felt it a great compliment when L (the librarian) smiled and said how much she loved the house, because it was so child-centred. We had planned to go to Drinnie’s Wood that afternoon and invited her to go along.

We had a lovely walk up there. Maia splashed in every puddle, Cora carried her backpack of supplies, and they headed straight for the geocache we found last year! We swapped a couple of items from it, and L was fascinated with the concept I think. After that we discovered that the tower was closed due to vandalism. Cora and Calvin were upset about not being able to go up to the tower, and I was upset that anyone would vandalism a beautiful public place like this!

So, instead of going up, we sat at the picnic bench and had our strawberries and water. Then we played tag and hide and seek for the best part of an hour before heading back. We played I spy on the walk back, I love how literacy weaves it’s way into the cloth of fun for my children! We drove the long way home and saw some beautiful Highland cows and Shetland ponies. I’ve said we can go back and give them some carrots, but in hindsight perhaps I should check with the owners first.. I hope we see L again soon.

Cora’s UFO

I love seeing their imaginations at work. This was a tub that a cake was in. She did it all herself, my only suggestion was what to use to make aliens!

And just because it’s so adorable, here’s Maia singing Ring Around the Rosie.

Calvin made a “smashing machine” out of blocks, people keep telling me he’ll be some sort of architect or engineer when he grows up. He just loves to know how things work and to invent new things. Video coming soon!

We’re studying tornadoes this week, after the devastation in Joplin, MO. We’re also trying to get the hang of telling time… we’ll see how that goes!

Trouble in Paradise

Firstly, I don’t know what’s going on with WordPress, but I find it very hard to ever get in to update the blog. It either never loads or it loads incorrectly. Fingers crossed it’s going to work now… I have so much to say about our home educating lately but need to go to bed after spending 40 minutes trying to get this to work! I will update more tomorrow, Lord and WordPress willingQ
